Causes

Military Alliances- A lot of nations were allied with each other, so whenever a single country would get involved, another country that was allied with them got involved as well. This caused there to be a lot more countries to be involved than there needed to be. Allied alliences--->Russia, england, france, russia to the slavs.
Imperialism- Nations were looking to expand so the battles weren't just in one place, they were all over the world. It caused a lot of havoc between other nations.
Militarism- People thought that the bigger the better, so they tried to make their military's a lot bigger than the others. So each of the nations had a lot of soldiers and kept expanding.
Nationalism- Many people had a lot of pride for their country, so they were willing to fight for it. This caused a lot of fights and arguments which could cause battles between nations.
The Assassination of Archduke Franz Fernindad- He was the leader of Austria and went to Serbia to let them know that they would become apart of Austria. Someone didn't like this too much, so they shot him and killed him. After him being shot, Austria decided to go to war with Serbia.

Sinking of the Lusitania: The Germans put in place unrestricted submarine warfare. All ships would be sunk, no matter where from and no matter why they are sailing. A simple transport ship such as the Lusitania was struck and sunk by a German u-boat. Hundreds died, about 120 of them were Americans. This prompted the United States to demand the Germans restrict their submarines. They denied.
 
Black Tom Incident: "Black Tom" was an island in the New York harbor. It was named after a previous African American resident named Tom. After midnight, small fired were discovered on the pier. At about 2AM, the first explosion took place. It was equivalent of a 5.0 earthquake. The property damage was estimated at 20 million dollars. (247 million dollars this year.)

Kingsland Explosion: Took place in a munitions factory in New Jersey. The building, housing military weaponry, was sabotaged. Operatives were hired by standing employees. Fires were set. 

Zimmerman Note: This was an intercepted German spy note, translated by the French and given to the United States. It caused a lot of chaos because it was possibly translated wrong.
