The my lai massacre
The My Lai Massacre was a mass murder that happened (March 16, 1968) during the Vietnam war.It was between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians. Most of the victims were women, children, infants, and the elderly. There were some mutilated bodies(women) found that had been gang raped 26 U.S soldiers were charged with criminal charges for their actions at my lai but only second lieutenant william calley was convicted. He was found guilty of killing 22 villagers he was given a life sentence, but ended up only having 2-3 years under house arrest. The incident caused global outrage and increased domestic opposition to the U.S involvement in the Vietnam war.Once the first civilians were killed by fire, the soldiers began to attack both humans and animals. Members of the second platoon killed at least 60-70 Vietnamese.
I personally think it was horrible of the U.S army to do what they did. It really wasn't necessary to go after the weakest of the Vietnamese And they really didn't need to rub salt into the wound by raping their women. Thats just wrong. In my opinion, it made us seem like really terrible people. We took it way too far.
